That was the _____ that was

Put in week and my first thought goes back to my shallow(er) youth.  It started on the BBC and later came to US TV.  The start sang, “That was the week that was, It’s over, let it go …” and then inserted what had transpired.  Satirical as all get out. Got David Frost before the US public.  It was sort of like Laugh In where writing substituted for production values in B&W 60’s style.

These days you can’t tell the satire from the actual facts.  Besides Washington, poker has had it share of that.  Our equivalent of a different time where Mike, Vince and Shanna introduced us to a weird and wonderful game.  The casting for the players was an eclectic mix of dot-com millionaire, edgy kids and jaded oldsters.  A few even managed the test of time.  Ratings amazingly gave people a reason to watch Travel Channel.  Like That was the Week that was, it was a different time.

This  year?

  • Black Friday showed us the seamier side of Full Tilt
  • A collection of “winning” pros owe FT 16-mil
  • Jesus got his go at the cross along with other directors and officers
  • A  convicted French angle shooter is looked upon as the new savior

Click on a mouse and lose your house became chump change.  Russ Hamilton became little more than a guy with a putty nose and clown shoes.  The new poker personality disabused us of our naivety.  Destroyed has been the fun, friendship and enjoyment that average folks got.   We all knew that there was a lot of money involved in all this.   But, it didn’t affect us so we played on.

We have seen too much of That was the ____ that was.  Hard to reminisce about the good old days.  They were you know.

When Neteller went out of business, that seemed like the end of the world to online poker players. Little did we know.
