Mix Heart and Head

Got this email today that I’ll share.  Looks right based on what I know.   It reminded me of a story told to me by my Uncle Jay.  He was WWII Navy.  With his troop ship convoy ready to sail the cold Atlantic, the Red Cross and Salvation Army were at the dock with coffee and donuts.  The Red Cross was selling their stuff and the Salvation Army gave it away.  I’ve remembered that for a lot of years.

Ken, I worked for The Salvation Army in the early-mid eighties in their fundraising dept. They have a policy that no more than 22% of the donations received go to administration. They have a fairly aggressive fundraising program beyond the kettles and the annual Christmas mailer, yet the money is well spent. One of my responsibilities was to organize telephone solicitations in small cities and towns. The calls were made by volunteers, typically from VFWs, American Legion members and the like. I can’t tell you how many times I heard that Red Cross vs TSA story, that sentiment making my job a lot easier.

Bad press can last for years and years. My dad once told me that same story of the Salvation Army vs Red Cross almost word for word. As a result, the kettle campaigns have always received my support.

I give money each year to the Komen Race for the Cure. Glad to see it gets four stars (out of four). Thanks for the link.
