Warez the Beef
Warez it pirate speak for copyright stuff that shows up “for free” on the Internet — these days mostly from Torrent sites like thepiratesbay.org. It is also the source of those news articles where some granny in Keokuk let her grand-kids use the computer and gets a judgement against her for a gazillion buck. Well, it is all about to go legal compliment of the online poker industry — lets throw in a former there.
Remember at the very start when the UIGEA passed? (2006) The little island nation of Antigua-Barbuda got clobbered. It was a popular spot to run your sites from. Thousands there reportedly had jobs that went away with the UIGEA. They sued and won at the World Trade Organization. A number of other nations settled for things like the use of vacant government warehouses and other ridiculous, weird bribes to them. I’d think the government wouldn’t have millions of square feet of warehousing to dole out for mox nix but ya learn something new every day.
From the finding in 2007, nothing really happened until now. Today, the WTO granted A-B copyright exception. They are now authorized to sell or give away just about anything in movies, music, tv, software and really just about anything that also exists as a file. So, it could get cheaper to get The New York Times from A-B than the Times.
Our government is pissed and threatening the little nation. A-B’s response so far included the middle digit. Conjecture is that they will set up a COSTCO type business plan with an annual membership but the packages on their shelves will all be free. And, the product distributed will be legit.
We pulled for UIGEA opponents 6+ years ago when the UIGEA hit. A-B was one of the ones that looked like it hand a chance to stick it to the man. Looks like it is time for the man to bend over.
Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch.
